Twins, Rodney make a 1-year deal

Right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a $4.5 million, one-year contract, bringing an experienced, three-time All-Star closer to a bullpen in need of a ninth-inning specialist.

The deal was reached on Thursday during Major League Baseball's winter meetings, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced.

Rodney turns 41 on March 18 and will be in his 16th major league season. Well-known for firing an imaginary arrow to celebrate the final out of wins , he had 39 saves in 45 chances this year for Arizona.

For his career, Rodney is 44-63 with 300 saves in 828 relief appearances .

Astros pick up Joe Smith * Right-hander Joe Smith and the Houston Astros have agreed to a $15 million, two-year contract.

The 33-year-old gets $7 million next year and $8 million in 2019.

He was 3-0 with one save and 71 strikeouts over 54 innings in 59 relief appearances this year for Toronto and Cleveland, which reacquired him for a pair of minor leaguers at the July 31 trade deadline. Smith pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings over four games in the AL Division Series against the New York Yankees.

Smith is 44-28 with a 2.97 ERA in 698 relief appearances over 11 big league seasons .

On Tuesday, Yahoo Sports published excerpts of a recent physical Ohtani underwent in Japan that revealed a first-degree sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in the elbow of his prized right arm. Such sprains are quite common among pitchers, but the report caused consternation.

The Angels signed the 23-year-old star pitcher and hitter last week after a whirlwind courtship. Ohtani underwent two MRI exams as part of his pre-signing physical with the Angels, and the team has said it is satisfied with the results.
