Suriano out Again with Flu as Rutgers Falls to Minnesota

PISCATAWAY — Goodbyes are always tough, but Friday night was an especially difficult send off for the seniors of the Rutgers wrestling team.

Of the group of five Scarlet Knights, competing for the final time at the Rutgers Athletic Center, just two came up victorious. It left Rutgers in a bad position against No. 21 Minnesota and eventually led to a 20-12 defeat at the hands of the Golden Gophers.

The loss pushes the Scarlet Knights to 6-7 on the season and 2-6 in the Big Ten. It's the first time Rutgers is below .500 since January 2008.

"We've been wrestling well, and I thought tonight we wrestled really good in spots but struggled in others," coach Scott Goodale said. "It's not about the record ... losing, just like winning, is contagious."

The Scarlet Knights competed without No. 1 Nick Suriano, the former Bergen Catholic star, at 125 pounds.

"Nick's really suffering from the flu pretty hard right now," Goodale said. "It's part of the sport. We've got to get healthy, and we'll do that going forward. …
