Rep. Maher to Give Up Pa. Seat after 11 Terms

State Rep. John Maher, R-Upper St. Clair, credited with authoring the state's open records law and the state's first rules for lobbyists, announced Saturday that he won't seek a 12th term this year.

"Serving my neighbors has been the greatest honor of my life," Mr. Maher, 59, said in a release announcing his decision. "While I have no known opposition for re-election, and this decision was very difficult, I wanted to make an announcement in time for credible candidates to announce for the open seat."

All 203 state House seats are on the ballot this year. The primary is May 15. Mr. Maher's 40th District includes Upper St. Clair, Bethel Park and Peters.

Mr. Maher is a certified public account and owned a growing accounting firm, Maher Duessel, at the time he decided to jump into politics. He has served as speaker pro tempore of the House for 10 years. …
