Paterson Cop Cleared in 2016 Shooting

PATERSON — A grand jury has determined that a Paterson police officer was justified in shooting a man who she said was "running at her like a football player making a tackle," according to the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

The man, 43-year-old Larry Bouie, of Newark, was behaving erratically on Broadway, near police headquarters Oct. 29, 2016, when authorities were called to the scene, according to a statement issued by the Prosecutor's Office. Bouie was wounded in the stomach by the shot fired by the officer, authorities said.

The grand jury rendered its decision in January. Bouie has a civil lawsuit pending against the city.

Kaitin Nares, a lawyer representing Bouie in his civil lawsuit against the city, said she had not yet been notified of the grand jury's decision on the officer.

The officer, Haydee Sanatana, has not yet returned to work, city officials said. …
