Shadyside Website Picks Up Investments, Plans to Add Jobs

Niche.com, a Shadyside-based website providing information and reviews for colleges and grade schools throughout the nation, has raised $6.6 million in capital from two New York-based private equity groups - Allen & Company LLC and Grit Capital Partners.

Founder and CEO Luke Skurman said he will use the financing to build market share and expand the company's recruiting platform for K-12 schools and colleges. Niche currently has coverage on 7,000 colleges, 130,000 K-12 schools, as well as on 98,000 places to live across the country.

The company was founded by Carnegie Mellon University graduates in 2002 under the name College Prowler, but it was re-branded in 2013 as Niche.

Located on Ellsworth Avenue, it employs 56 people in Pittsburgh and plans to grow its workforce to 80 by the end of the year. …
