In regard to the city council District 8 special election, I have read some rather misleading characterizations published in your newspaper, as stated from my opponents' campaigns. Please allow me to set the record straight. In a letter last week, a supporter of Rennick Remley referred to me as a "political insider" backed by the "Democratic party machine" (Feb. 7, "Silly Filing Requirement for City Council Race"). One look at the campaign finance reports available online would have shown that I am the only candidate relying on the support of individuals over the machine. To my opponents, I would suggest they are entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts.

The campaign reports filed Feb. 1 reveal there is indeed one establishment-backed candidate in this race: Erika Strassburger, whose $90,000 report glaringly reveals the support of the "old boys club" and is replete with big donations from Grant Street insiders, including: $20,000 from developers, $40,000 in PAC donations and a combined $12,000 from the mayor, the mayor's chief of staff, the president of city council and the state Senate minority leader. …
