WELCOME to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks and buildings from bygone days with how they look now.

This week it's the turn of Luna Street and a rare archive photo dating back to 1895.

The photographer is standing on Great Ancoats Street facing away from Oldham Street.

The image shows the corner of Luna Street and Great Ancoats Street.

Luna Street is between the white stone building and the all-glass former Daily Express building.

There have been huge changes since 1895. The furnishing warehouse on the left has disappeared, as have the mixed houses and shops on the right.

Horse-drawn carriages are strongly in evidence in the original image. The streets are rutted and cobbled and old gas lamps are still intact. …
