Canadian athletes have secured the country's first gold medals at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Canada's figure skating squad captured the first gold, winning the team event. Then Mikael (MEE'-kayl) Kingsbury claimed top spot in the men's moguls for his first Olympic title.

Laurie Blouin (bloo-EHN') won silver in the women's snowboard event. Blouin overcame high winds to nail a clean second run for 76-point-3-3 points. Max Parrot (pa-ROH') won silver and Regina's Mark McMorris took the bronze on the men's side.

The Toronto Blue Jays will honour former pitcher Roy (Doc) Halladay. The star pitcher died in November at the age of 40 when the plane he was flying crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. Toronto will retire Halladay's Number 32 jersey prior to its season-opening game versus the New York Yankees, joining Roberto Alomar as the lone players in club history to have their uniforms retired. …
