Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has tweeted his condolences to those grieving in Parkland, Florida and is wishing a full recovery to the injured in Wednesday's deadly mass shooting at the local high school.

Trudeau said "Canadians have you in our hearts."

The Broward County sheriff says a young gunman, donning a gas mask, smoke grenades and multiple magazines of ammunition, opened fire with a semi-automatic weapon and shot nearly three-dozen people, killing at least 17. (1)



Authorities in Florida say the former student suspected of killing at least 17 people at a Florida high school posted "very, very disturbing" material on social media before the deadly shooting rampage.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel says the 19-year-old suspect in custody, Nikolas Cruz, had been expelled from the school last year because of unspecified disciplinary reasons.

He says investigators are now dissecting Cruz's social media posts. (1)



Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says he welcomes Prime Minister Trudeau's comments on overhauling the way the federal government relates to Indigenous Peoples.

Trudeau said yesterday the new approach is needed to tackle the many challenges facing Indigenous communities, including overcrowded housing, unsafe drinking water and high rates of youth suicide.

Bellegarde says the news comes during a tough week, in the wake of Friday's jury acquittal of a farmer who shot a young Indigenous man on his farm near Biggar, Saskatchewan.

Gerald Stanley was found not guilty of second-degree murder in the death of Colten Boushie, sparking protests over the fact there were no Indigenous people on the jury. (1)
