Suspect Charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in Fatal Shooting of Belleville Man, 19

BELLEVILLE * A man from Fairview Heights has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death Monday of Cole Wierciszewski, 19, of Belleville.

Bail for Jewell Q. Smith, 20, was set at $100,000, St. Clair County Sheriff Richard Watson said in a news release.

This was not an intentional shooting, St. Clair County Sheriff's Department Capt. Bruce Fleshren said in a news conference Friday. The men in the house were handling the 20-gauge shotgun and should have been aware that it was loaded, he said.

The gun belonged to the victim, he said.

Someone took Wierciszewski to Memorial Hospital in Belleville with a gunshot wound on Monday afternoon, police said. He died about 30 minutes later.

Investigators said Wierciszewski had apparently been shot in the 100 block of Paulette Drive. …
