1819 Pittsburgh Academy was rechartered by the Legislature and renamed Western University of Pennsylvania; its location was on Third Avenue.

1901 The Golden Triangle had a flood equaling that of February 1884, when floodwaters reached a level of over 36 feet.

1943 Madame Chiang Kai-shek, wife of the Chinese leader, addressed members of the Senate and then the House, becoming the first Chinese national to address both houses of the U.S. Congress.
