Regarding "Ridgewood's Graydon Pool tree is coming down" (northjersey.com, Feb. 12):

As a 48-year resident of Ridgewood, I am sorry to see that the sycamore tree at Graydon Pool will be cut down. Its beautiful spread over the four seasons helped remind us what Ridgewood is all about, and during the summer it brought back happy memories of the wonderful time we used to spend at Graydon with our two boys.

But for all sorts of good reasons, including reaching its life limit, it has to go. And hopefully the Village Council can make use of this event, not to grieve but to inspire.

For instance:

Discuss what can be done to improve the condition of the beautiful canopy of trees in Ridgewood that is in terrible shape.

Educate the public on all that trees do for us and the need to plant more of them.

Engage kids to become better environmentalists. …
