Rivalry Intact under New Basketball Alignments

The Penn Hills and Woodland Hills boys basketball teams will drop from Class 6A to 5A next season, but the two rivals will continue to play in the same section.

The WPIAL board of directors met Monday and approved new section alignments for next basketball season. Some of the changes will mean more travel for some teams, but the Penn Hills-Woodland Hills rivalry was kept intact.

"A lot of the changes are the outcomes of the expansion [to six classifications]," WPIAL executive director Tim O'Malley said.

In 2016, the PIAA added two classifications to some sports, changing basketball from four to six. The PIAA reclassifies schools every two years, based on student enrollment. The WPIAL realigns sections for all sports every two years. …
