FORMER United striker Andy Cole has spoken of his struggle with a rare illness and the kidney transplant which followed.

Cole today backed our sister paper The Mirror's campaign to Change the Law for Life on organ donation - and made a personal plea to MPs to save lives. The ex-England international underwent the transplant last April after contracting a mystery virus on return from Vietnam in 2015.

In an exclusive interview, Cole spoke of his brush with death for the first time. The 46-year-old has struggled with his condition for two years before his nephew Alexander Palmer, 29, was found to be the perfect match for a transplant.

And he wiped away tears as he spoke of the sacrifice, the 'lifelong debt' he owes his sister's son.
