Summer sent winter a postcard Wednesday.

By Wednesday afternoon, the mercury had soared as high as 79 degrees across North Jersey, becoming the region's warmest day ever in February. In Bergenfield, the warm temperature shattered a 2002 record of 62 degrees, said Bob Ziff, spokesman for the North Jersey Weather Observers. In Hawthorne, the temperature had climbed to 69 in 1930, Ziff said.

The previous high for this month was 76 degrees on Feb. 15, 1949, based on readings at Newark Liberty International Airport dating back to 1931, and the average high temperature for Feb. 20 and 21 is 43.5 degrees.

The warmth isn't going to last past Wednesday, the National Weather Service says. Temperatures are likely to dip back into the 40s, and rain is expected to come by Thursday and stay through the weekend. …
