1732: The first president of the United States, George Washington, was born in Westmoreland County in the Colony of Virginia.

1856: The first national convention of Republicans met in Lafayette Hall in Pittsburgh for a two-day session to complete national party organization.

1909: The Great White Fleet, a naval task force sent on a round-the-world voyage by President Theodore Roosevelt, returned after more than a year at sea.

1947: Hundreds of people were forced to seek overnight shelter Downtown when an 11-inch snowstorm hit Pittsburgh and disrupted traffic.

1987: Pop artist Andy Warhol, who was born in Pittsburgh, died at age 58. He is buried in St. John the Baptist Byzantine Catholic Cemetery in Bethel Park.
