Ardent Manchester rock fans will all recall the influential music of local group Van der Graaf Generator. The band was formed in 1967 by Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith who met at Manchester University. ¦ The original line up consisted of Hammill, Smith and organist Nick Pearne.

¦ Pearne quickly left the group which resulted in numerous line-up changes. ¦ The band signed to Charisma Records but failed to achieve any real success before the line-up changed again. ¦ The new-look group consisted of Hammill, David Jackson, Guy Evans and Hugh Banton. They experienced brief success in the UK with two album releases.

¦ The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other was released in Feb 1970 and H to He, Who Am the Only One was released in December 1970.
