What fire alarms mean to students today

I am a freshman at Ridgewood High School. When hearing that 17 people died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, I was devastated. As most know, the gunman opened fire with a AR-15 after pulling a fire alarm to get students and teachers out of their classrooms. Our principal, Dr. Gorman, addressed the Florida shooting over the loudspeaker on Thursday and it was like we were all thinking the same thing - another school shooting, more kids and teachers dead at the hands of guns.

Later that day, the fire alarm blared. It didn't make sense because we just had a fire drill the day before. Leaving the classroom, many of us were scared that a crazed person was pulling the alarm to get us out of our classrooms to shoot us, just as the gunman did in Florida. That is something no student or teacher should ever have to fear at school. It turned out a kid accidently set off the alarm, and we were all able to go back to our classrooms. …
