Saddle River to Take over Trash Pickup

SADDLE RIVER — The borough plans to dump an outside vendor and handle garbage and recycling services in-house starting next year – a change that could save the town about $200,000 in operating expenses annually, according to officials.

The plan was sparked by a bidding dispute that resulted in a $93,000 increase in the contract with Suburban Disposal Inc. this year, despite no discernible increase in services, Borough Administrator Jerry Giaimis said. Residents also routinely call borough hall to complain about missed pick-ups, officials say.

A representative for Suburban Disposal declined to comment.

The town plans to hire one part-time and two full-time Department of Public Works employees and must buy new equipment to carry out the plan, Giaimis said. …
