THE 'Beast from the East' continued to batter Greater Manchester yesterday - and forecasters are expecting more icy weather as we approach the weekend.

Whipping winds and sub-zero flurries rolled across the region throughout the day yesterday, with higher parts of Oldham, Rochdale and Tameside the worst affected.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning for snow, which was in place from 5am until midnight last night.

More than 20 schools were closed, including campuses in Stockport, Oldham and Rochdale, and commuters faced delays, diversions and cancellations on public transport. There are now fresh alerts in place for today and Friday.

According to Met Office figures, temperatures dropped to around -6C in parts of the region yesterday, with a wind chill making it feel more like -12C.

A new weather warning, again for ice and snow, comes into effect today, with separate warnings on Friday and Saturday which covers all of Greater Manchester. …
