Alice Cooper Returns to North Jersey in March

Article excerpt

Alice Cooper got the old gang together on his latest album, "Paranormal." Two of its songs feature the surviving members of the godfather of shock rock's original band.

The bassist Dennis Dunaway, the drummer Neal Smith and the guitarist Michael Bruce performed together with Cooper for the first time since 1974 on the tracks "Genuine American Girl" and "You and All of Your Friends." The original band's other guitarist, Glen Buxton, died in 1997.

"We played the songs live in the studio like we used to, which gives them that original feel," Cooper says. "The original band has this dark sound and real threat to it."

"Genuine American Girl" is a throwback to the band's 1960s garage rock beginnings, while the anthemic "You and All of Your Friends" is reminiscent of Cooper classics like "School's Out."

Cooper, who performs in Englewood on Monday and in Morristown on March 9, is touring with his solo band. But he says Dunaway, Smith and Bruce are welcome to join them anytime. "They're auxiliary members of the band," Cooper says. "They're always invited."

"Paranormal," Cooper's 27th album, was released last year. It also includes guest spots from U2's Larry Mullen Jr., who plays drums on most of the album; ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, who contributes to the boogie-blues track "Fallen in Love," and Roger Glover of Deep Purple, who plays bass on the title track.

"It was a matter of picking the right people for the right songs," Cooper says. "It changes things up a bit, but not too much."

Cooper says his shows in North Jersey will mix tracks from "Paranormal" with classic crowd-pleasers like "School's Out," "Billion Dollar Babies," "No More Mr. Nice Guy" and "Welcome to My Nightmare."

Cooper is also starring in NBC-TV's live broadcast of the rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar" on Easter Sunday, April 1. He's playing the role of King Herod. …
