Bassist Joe Policastro Brings Jazz Trio to Alphabet City

It isn't often that you hear an arco (bowed) bass in a jazz setting, which sets Joe Policastro apart from other players.

Mr. Policastro, a Cincinnati native who moved to Chicago for graduate studies at DePaul University and now calls that city home, brings his trio to Alphabet City on the North Side Thursday night.

"We feel like the band has a truly defined sound," he says of the trio with guitarist Dave Miller and drummer Mikel Avery. Whether a pop tune, a Thelonious Monk composition or an original, "It ends up sounding like us."

The band came about at a gig at Pops for Champagne - "it wasn't even under my name" - but that turned into a regular night, and now it's three per week.

"Everybody took it very seriously," he says. "We wrote and arranged music, came up with a band sound." In addition, "We started adapting with lots of non-jazz material. …
