OTTAWA - The Trudeau government brings down its latest budget today, marking the mid-mandate fiscal blueprint for the Liberals.

The overarching theme of the document will be one of gender equality.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau has suggested it will focus on efforts to boost the participation of women in the workforce as part of an overall plan to promote so-called inclusive growth.

It's expected to include measures such as dedicated paid leave for new fathers, a major financial boost to basic scientific research across Canada and big money to tackle the acute housing shortage in Indigenous communities.

Former Liberal strategist Greg MacEachern says the budget gives the party a chance to set the tone for the next election campaign while potentially saving room for bigger, flashier items to come closer to the vote. …
