NHS Appeals for Blood Donors as Weather Causes Hospitals to Run Short

THE NHS is urgently appealing for blood donors after the recent heavy snow left hospitals running short.

The 'Beast from the East' caused so much travel disruption regular donors have been unable to attend appointments, leaving the NHS critically short of blood.

Usually donors are expected to book a slot in advance, but due to the intense snowfall, centres are currently accepting anyone who can get to them.

Hospitals need 6,000 units every day across England.

Mike Stredder, NHS Blood and Transplant director of blood donation, said: "The recent poor to get out, we need them to come along to a session in Greater Manchester and donate if they are able.

"If not then please book an appointment for the near future to ensure we keep up the momentum and collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients. …
