S. Fayette Girls Coach Steps Down

Matt Bacco was in his 20s when he became the girls basketball coach at South Fayette High School. In 10 seasons, he built a successful program that won a WPIAL title and made the playoffs every season, and Bacco won Pittsburgh Post-Gazette coach of the year honors two years ago.

But Bacco has decided to walk away from the program he built into prominence. He recently resigned as South Fayette's coach.

Bacco, 38, averaged 17 wins a season and had a record of 171-78. He won a WPIAL championship in 2016 and made it to the PIAA semifinals in 2017. The Lions were 12-9 this year.

Sources said parent and school board meddling led to Bacco's resignation, but Bacco wouldn't give a specific reason for his decision. Two of his assistant coaches resigned after two games this season.

"We just felt, myself and my staff, that it was time for a change," Bacco said. …
