MERRITT, B.C. x-18s. The rejection of a proposed rainbow crosswalk in Merritt, B-C, has drummed up much wider community support to decorate the city with inclusive symbols. Students from Merritt Secondary wanted to paint a crosswalk near the school but city council voted down the idea over concerns other groups such as the local hockey team would want a crosswalk painted with their colours as well. Teacher Kati Spencer says while the decision was disappointing, many people in the community have stepped up by hanging rainbow flags in windows, baking cookies and offering other locations to paint rainbows.
