4 Local Students Win Film Prizes

HACKENSACK — Four students from the Bergen County Academies won prizes for their two documentaries in a nationwide competition.

Jamie San Antonio, Mary Castillo, Helena Merker and Phoebe Om have won honorable mention prizes in C-SPAN's national StudentCam competition. San Antonio and Castillo will receive $250 for their film "Immigration in the Constitution" and Merker and Om will receive $250 for their film "Free Press Free People."

The competition sought documentaries focusing on the Constitution and what some of its provisions mean to the budding filmmakers. The four students were among more than 300 students from across the country who won a total of $100,000 for 150 winning videos.

"Students across the country engaged in conversation on the local level with elected officials, experts, community leaders and educators to explore how national issues impact their daily lives," Craig McAndrew, C-SPAN's Manager of Education Relations, said, in a prepared statement. …
