Welcome to Looking Back, where we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks and buildings from bygone days to see how they have changed

THIS week our original image shows Cannon Street looking towards High Street in 1955. The photograph was taken from Corporation Street. Massive changes have taken place since the mid-1950s.

In our second image, from the early 1990s, a multi-storey car park spans the street and almost all of the buildings in the first photo have been demolished to make way for new development - including the Manchester Arndale shopping centre.

The Arndale was built in phases between 1972 and 1979 at a cost of £100m.

The centre's original tiles are still visible in the large ramp up to the car park and on the sides of the walls. …
