I REFER to John McCarthy's response to my criticism of his love for Metrolink and all things Droylsden, where he says among other things that it's a system for the many, not the few ('Traffic lights not trams are to blame for gridlock,' Viewpoints, February 7) Now where have I heard that before? However, in response to his comments on traffic issues, does he actually drive a car any distance? This system was brought in to alleviate traffic on roads into Manchester and the very opposite has happened, which is to be expected when you run what is in essence a train along a major route.

If I took a tram from Ashton to Manchester it would take 50 minutes minimum. I could drive there on a good day in 10 minutes. …
