The Commonheart, which was crossing the Arkansas-Texas border Wednesday morning, is headed to the SXSW Music Conference in Austin, Texas, with a special assignment: Bring along a Jerry Garcia tune.

The 10-member Pittsburgh soul-rock band, on its second consecutive trip to SXSW, is playing four different showcases, including the Brooklyn Bowl Family Reunion - presented by Relix, Brooklyn Vegan, Consequence of Sound and This Song Is Sick - which features a Relix celebration of the late Grateful Dead legend.

The Commonheart has made a suitable choice.

"Charles Bradley did an arrangement of 'Cumberland Blues,'" singer Clinton Clegg said. "We are doing that, in tribute to him as well."

Mr. Bradley, "The Screaming Eagle of Soul," died of stomach cancer in September at 68, after a late-career surge.

Along with the Garcia tune, The Commonheart will be showcasing songs from a new unreleased album that follows the 2016 debut "Grown."

Mr. Clegg says the trip is a "very deliberate display of what we have new for the future. This trip feels a lot more businesslike than last year. While last year looking back seems like we were dipping a toe in SXSW, this year feels like we dove all the way in, with better shows and opportunity."

The Commonheart is also scheduled for the Rooster Walk 10 Music & Arts Festival in Virginia in May and the Peach Music Festival in Scranton in July with Phil Lesh, Gov't Mule and more.

Making his SXSW debut will be Hill District hip-hop phenom Jimmy Wopo, sharing stages with such artists as OMB Peezy, D Savage, Sherwood Marty, Maine & Tec, JayDaYoungan and Sauce Walka.

"All these artists are making a heavy impact on the game currently, so it's perfect for Wopo to be a part of," says manager Taylor Maglin, whose site Daily Loud is presenting a showcase Thursday night at Peckerheads.

Wopo, who is in the running for XXL magazine's 2018 Freshman Class, is closing in on 300,000 views for his latest video, "Patty Cake" (Kodak Black Remix), just released on Friday. …
