EDMONTON x-13s. Community leaders in Halifax's north end say they're thrilled the historically black neighbourhood has earned a spot on the new 10-dollar bill. The bank note features a historic map of the north end behind a portrait of one of its most famous business owners, Viola Desmond. Sylvia Parris of the north end's Delmore Buddy Daye Learning Institute says she thinks Desmond's story is emblematic of the historic Halifax community's strengths.

TAG: The bill recognizes Desmond's legendary stand for civil rights in 1946 when she refused to leave the whites-only section of a movie theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. Desmond was also a beautician who owned a salon on the north end's main drag and started her own line of cosmetics. …
