Jobless Rate in Pittsburgh Region Stays at 4.9 Percent

The seasonally adjusted jobless rate in the Pittsburgh region held steady at 4.9 percent in January as the number of unemployed people fell, but more people entered the labor force to look for work, according to the monthly report from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

The jobless rate for the seven-county area was higher than the 4.8 percent rate for the state and 4.1 percent for the nation in January.

Within the Pittsburgh region, Allegheny County had the lowest rate at 4.5 percent while Fayette County was highest at 6.8 percent.

Across Pennsylvania, unemployment ranged from a low of 3.5 percent in Chester County to 7 percent in Forest County, the state said.

The region's annual job growth was 1.7 percent as employers added 19,600 jobs since January 2017. …
