Animal Control Removes Bobcat from Gateway Clipper Boat

Pittsburghers were reminded Sunday morning of their proximity to the wilds when a bobcat was captured on a passenger vessel in the Gateway Clipper Fleet.

The wild cat - about twice the size of a normal house cat - was spotted on the open-air third deck of The Empress vessel during a routine safety check just prior to passenger boarding at 10 a.m. Sunday.

"The crew does rounds on the boat prior to boarding. During this safety check we saw [the bobcat] running on the deck," said Joe D'Amico, director of service operations for the Gateway Clipper Fleet.

The inspection was taking place at 9:55 a.m., just prior to the 10 a.m. start of boarding for the 11 a.m. boat ride.

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Animal Care and Control officers were called to the scene. Within an hour, officers Steve Costa and Jeff Ley had corralled the bobcat, secured it with a catch pole, caged it and removed it from the boat uninjured. …
