The Liberal government is promising to cut hospital wait times, lower child-care costs and expand mental-health services in its final budget before the provincial election.

The government's speech from the throne also pledged to reduce the overall deficit.

The Liberals offered no specific numbers for the promised investments but said they would be announced in the March 28th budget.

The government also announced plans to expand the O-HIP Plus program that currently offers free pharmacare to people under 25, saying it wants to make the program available to a larger swath of the population.

N-D-P Leader Andrea Horwath is dismissing the Liberals' planned health-care measures as carrots dangled in anticipation of the upcoming election.

Horwath says the plan is similar to the dental-care platform her own party announced just days ago.

The New Democrats have promised to invest 1.2 billion dollars in a dental program that would subsidize care for 4.5 million Ontarians.

Horwath has said the money for the program would be raised through tax increases on corporations and the wealthy. (The Canadian Press)

(Via-Rail-Funding)

Via Rail says it's preparing to launch a process to replace aging trains on its main corridor from Quebec City to Windsor.

Funding to replace Via's fleet in the busy corridor through southern and eastern Ontario was included in the recent federal budget.

Via says it expects the new trains will be in service by 2022.

The trains are expected to have more fuel-efficient engines and better accessibility for visually, hearing and physically impaired passengers. (The Canadian Press)
