PITT NAMES NEW DEAN OF ENGINEERING SCHOOL

The University of Pittsburgh has named a new dean to lead its Swanson School of Engineering.

James R. Martin II, a civil engineer who has been working at Clemson University, will begin his position at Pitt on Aug. 15.

Much of Mr. Martin's career has been focused on improving engineering standards related to earthquakes, particularly with building codes, foundation engineering and disaster risk management, Pitt said in making the announcement Wednesday.

Mr. Martin is chair of the Glenn Department of Civil Engineering at Clemson. Before that, he spent five years as director of the Disaster Risk Management Institute while serving on the faculty at Virginia Tech.
