UNITED have beaten City to the signing of highly-rated Polish defender Lukasz Bejger.

M.E.N. Sport understands the Reds have agreed to sign the 16-year-old after he had a trial in August - and he could be announced among their academy intake ahead of the 2018-19 season.

Poland Under-16 international Bejger was with Lech Poznan's academy and made his youth debut for the national team against Scotland in September.

Bejger, who captained the Under-16s against Moldova last week, is primarily a centre-back but can also play at right-back.

In September, United added Piotr Sadowski - who was previously attached to Lech Poznan - to their European scouting network and Bejger will hope to become the first outfield Polish player to represent the United firstteam.

Reds academy head Nicky Butt has overseen an aggressive recruitment drive over the past two years in an effort to revitalise the club's youth set-up, which was left in a state of flux following Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. …
