P05 - (Opioid-Crisis) OTTAWA. x-12s. Access to treatment for opioid-use disorder is about to get easier as the government prepares to change drugs laws to make it more straightforward for patients to access prescription heroin and methadone. Starting May 19th, physicians will no longer need to apply for an exemption to prescribe and administer heroin, and prescription heroin will be made accessible outside of just a hospital setting, such as an addiction clinic. Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor says removing barriers to treatment is crucial to stemming what Health Canada describes as a national public health crisis. ("..as a service.")
