New Mother Faces Trial after Child Left in Trash

A Westmoreland County woman faces trial on charges that she abandoned her newborn child in the trash can of a gas station restroom in 2016.

Brittany Conway, 25, of Vandergrift, waived her preliminary hearing Monday before Belle Vernon District Judge Charles M. Christner on misdemeanor charges of endangering the welfare of children and recklessly endangering another person.

North Belle Vernon police said they were dispatched to a 7-Eleven on Sept. 24, 2016, on a call about a woman who appeared to be having a miscarriage in the restroom.

Medical personnel initially attended to the situation while police waited outside the restroom.

Upon hearing crying from inside the women's room, police entered and discovered a newborn baby - umbilical cord and placenta still attached -- in a plastic bag at the bottom of a trash receptacle, according to a police affidavit. …
