THE VERVE Wigan band The Verve are responsible for some of the most influential and best remembered songs of the 90s.

¦ The Verve formed in 1990 after meeting at Winstanley Sixth Form College in Wigan. The band consisted of Richard Ashcroft, Simon Jones, Nick McCabe and Peter Salisbury. ¦ The group released several singles and albums in the early 90s. Their first singles charted well in the Indie chart but failed to enter the UK Top 40. The 1993 album A Storm in Heaven fared well in the Indie charts too but only reached No. 27 In the UK album charts.

¦ The band performed gigs with Oasis who were relatively unknown at the time. Richard Ashcroft and Noel Gallagher were good friends. Noel dedicated the song Cast No Shadow to Ashcroft. Ashcroft returned the favour with A Northern Soul. ¦ The band split briefly in 1995 but reunited to record their next album. …
