Welcome to Then and Now, where each week we compare images of Manchester streets, landmarks and buildings from bygone days with how they look now

HIS week we feature the Ashton Canal looking towards the former Stuart Street power station.

The Manchester Velodrome now occupies the power station site. Sportcity is to the right of the picture.

Stuart Street power station was built in 1900. An IRA plot to destroy it along with the Liverpool Docks was foiled in 1920.

The station came under the control of the British Electricity Authority following nationalisation in 1948 and was closed in 1975.

It was demolished in the late 1970s. The cooling towers were taken down in February 1978.

Sportcity, built to host the 2002 Commonwealth Games, was the proposed location for the UK's first supercasino. …
