ARJEN Robben has claimed he would have signed for United if they had offered him a contract immediately after showing him around Carrington back in 2004.

The Dutchman was rated as one of Europe's hottest prospects at the time following an impressive spell at PSV and, initially, United were leading the race for his signature.

Robben met with Sir Alex Ferguson and was given a tour of Old Trafford and the club's training ground before having dinner with the wily Scot, which appeared to swing the deal United's way amid interest from Chelsea.

The youngster's father, Hans, claimed at the time 'my son will go to Chelsea over my dead body' - only for Robben to seal a move to Stamford Bridge just a few weeks later.

So what happened? "I had a very good conversation with [Ferguson] over dinner in Manchester and we spoke about football and life," Robben told FourFourTwo. …
