Highmark Makes $25M Grant to Penn State Health

Highmark has made a $25 million grant to Penn State Health to expand cancer research, improve access to drug trials for patients and to develop new medicines, the Pittsburgh-based insurer announced Thursday.

The funding is the first financial commitment to Penn State Health since Highmark partnered with the Hershey, Pa.-based health system in December.

Highmark, a health insurance company that also operates a hospital network, and Penn State Health are involved in a long-term partnership that includes a joint investment of $1 billion to develop community-based health care services.

"This is all part of our population health strategy," Highmark president and CEO David Holmberg said.

"We'd rather keep people close to home, in an environment where they have the best shot at the best outcomes," he said. …
