B-C's Agriculture Minister Lana Popham says the province is considering recommendations contained in a new report on fish farming.

A provincial advisory council's 230-page report recommends fish farm companies be required to have agreements in place with area First Nations before tenures for the facilities are approved.

It also recommends an independent science council to review "conflicting science" and fill information gaps about the farms, and consider a cap on how many farmed fish are allowed in a certain area.

The government is currently reviewing 20 fish-farm tenures that are up for renewal this June for facilities in the waters between northern Vancouver Island and the mainland. (The Canadian Press)

(Trump-China)

U-S President Donald Trump has instructed his trade representative to consider slapping 100-billion dollars U-S in additional tariffs on Chinese goods.

The move comes a day after China issued a 50-billion dollar list of American goods including soybeans for possible tariff hikes in an escalating and potentially damaging dispute.

Trump has also instructed his secretary of agriculture to implement a plan to protect American farmers and agricultural interests.

Trump argues China's trade practices have led to the closure of American factories and the loss of millions of jobs. (The Associated Press)

(Agri-Food-Research)

Richardson International is spending more than 30-million dollars to develop what it says will be a world-class agri-food research centre in downtown Winnipeg.

It says the Richardson Innovation Centre will be used for product development and will complement its food and ingredients division.

Part of the focus will on the increased use of robotics and automation in food processing and packaging.

Spokesman Chuck Cohen says the centre will be a training facility for Richardson's employees and customers and an education centre for food science students and the culinary community. …
