Soup Maker on North Side Revokes Plant-Closing Notice

The Riverbend Foods soup plant on the North Side - which had been embroiled in contentious labor negotiations this year - has withdrawn the plant closing notice that it had filed with the state early last month.

The WARN Act notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry had notified workers of a possible plant closure on May 10.

"The Riverbend Foods plant will remain open for the foreseeable future," the company said in an email to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Thursday afternoon.

"There are still some operational improvements that need to be made, but we are very optimistic that together with the UFCW, we're going to be able to increase our sales opportunities and grow this business."

At the end of March, production employees at the former Heinz plant went to work under terms of a new three-year contract imposed by the company after the union rejected the latest offer. …
