Hungary's Course despite Eu Concerns, Orban Wins a Clear Mandate

In the days before the April 8 elections in Hungary, outside observers held out hope that voters would reject the increasingly authoritarian leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Those hopes were sharply dashed by the overwhelming victory of his Fidesz party and its allies.

They took two-thirds of the seats in the Hungarian parliament, enough even to modify the Constitution should they so choose.

European Union membership has lifted Hungary, since it joined in 2004, from post-war and post-Soviet occupation poverty to increasing economic health. Yet the EU has viewed with some distress Mr. Orban's approach to democracy, as well as his government's resistance to a common EU policy toward immigration into Europe from war-torn countries to the east. …
