Explosions can be heard around tonight Damascus.

U-S President Donald Trump says the United States has ''launched precision strikes'' on targets associated with Syrian chemical weapons program.

Trump spoke from the White House on Friday night.

He says a ''combined operation'' with France and the United Kingdom is underway.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has ruled out any Canadian participation in military action.

Trump says that last Saturday, Syrian President Bashar Assad deployed chemical weapons in what he calls -- quoting here -- ''significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very terrible regime.'' (19)



Canada is the latest country to blame Syrian President Bashar Assad for a deadly chemical-weapons attack on a rebel-held enclave near Damascus last week.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland says it's clear to Canada chemical weapons were used and that they were used by the Assad regime.

She doesn't specify how she knows the Syrian government is responsible.

Freeland does say Canada is working with non-governmental organizations and others to collect evidence of war crimes and other atrocities in Syria.

More than 40 people were killed and 500 injured -- including women and children -- after poison gas was used in the attack. (19)



The White House has unleashed a blistering critique of former F-B-I Director James Comey as he begins promoting his ''A Higher Loyalty'' memoir.

Press Secretary Sarah Sanders is accusing Comey of leaking classified information and breaking what she calls his ''sacred trust with the president of the United States, the dedicated agents of the F-B-I and the American people.''

In the book, Comey compares U-S President Donald Trump to a mob boss and mocks his appearance and says his leadership of the country ''ego driven. …
