St. Louis' Bike-Share System Gets off to a Shivering Start

ST. LOUIS - "Let's come back tomorrow when the sun's out and ride these bikes."

That's how Alderman Scott Ogilvie ended his remarks at a chilly outdoor news conference at Kiener Plaza downtown Monday morning that kicked off the city's bike-share system.

With the temperature in the low 30s and snow flurries in the air, Mayor Lyda Krewson, Ogilvie and other speakers heralded the new rental option.

Ofo and LimeBike, two competing companies, are placing a total of up to 1,500 bikes on city sidewalks and in other spots this week. Customers are able to find and rent them through smartphone apps and GPS tracking.

The number could grow to 5,000 , city officials said.

Krewson said the availability of bikes for short trips will benefit residents and tourists alike. …
