Nigel Short is a well known chess prodigy who earned his first Grandmaster title when he was just 19. He was ranked number 3 in the world in the late 80s and went on to become the first player from England to play in the World Chess Championships in 1993.

¦ Short grew up in Atherton and went to school in Bolton, born in Leigh, Lancs. He later attended Leigh college where he joined the chess club that his father originally founded.

¦ He is also a member of Bolton Chess Club which had rejected him years earlier because of his young age. ¦ Short was a chess prodigy from a very young age. He was the youngest ever player in the British Chess Championship in 1977 at only 11 years old.

¦ He became the youngest International Master in 1979 and took part in four World Junior Championships between 1980 and 1983. …
