U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent, the Allentown Republican who has served Pennsylvania's 15th District since 2005, said Tuesday he will resign soon.

Mr. Dent's announcement speeds up his departure from Congress. He said last year he would not seek re-election this November after seven terms representing the Lehigh Valley area.

"After discussions with my family and careful reflection, I have decided to leave Congress in the coming weeks," Mr. Dent said in a statement Tuesday. "Serving the people of the 15th Congressional District has been a tremendous responsibility and the privilege of a lifetime, and I am honored by the trust that so many of my constituents placed in me to represent them in Washington.

Under Pennsylvania law, Gov. Tom Wolf will call a special election to fill the vacancy for the rest of Mr. Dent's term, but the date won't be set until he gives the date of his resignation. …
