A B-C lawyer says today's Supreme Court of Canada ruling on interprovincial trade laws may have other implications, including for the proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion.

Shea Coulson, who represented some British Columbia wineries at the trial, says the decision is "progressive" because its wording liberalizes some safeguards against protectionism.

Coulson says the high court might have been referring to Trans Mountain in part of the judgment that says punishing another province is not permissible.

However Miles Prodan -- who heads the British Columbia Wine Institute -- says he's disappointed the high court did not clear the way for B-C wineries to begin shipping products to consumers in other provinces. (The Canadian Press)

(BC-Liquor-Wages)

A worker's rights group says it's happy that the B-C government plans to close the wage gap between liquor servers and the province's minimum wage, but it would prefer the change happens sooner.

The N-D-P government says starting in June, liquor servers will get incremental raises until their wage catches up to the regular minimum wage in 2021, when it is set to be 15 dollars and 20 cents.

Retail Action Network says the liquor servers' minimum wage reinforces pay inequity because most servers are women.

However, the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives says it's disappointed that farm workers have not been brought under minimum-wage protection but instead get a small hike in piece rates next year as the Fair Wage Commission spends more time studying their situation. (The Canadian Press)
